The Southern Publishing Colour Collection 1927-1963

In 2011, deep down in a dark dingy room in the bowels of the Argus building in Hollingbury, Brighton. Lay several thousand glass plates  - hidden for over a generation.

With the help of some colleagues we set about digitizing the collection via my son Daniel's Nikon digital camera and an old light box.

We were amazed by the results and every day for six months we unearthed pieces of priceless local social history exposed by a photographer previously working at the Southern Publishing Company.

For prosperity and safe keeping, the original glass plates and digitised B/W images were donated to The Keep, Brighton, Sussex County Cricket Club and Brighton & Hove Albion.

In 2020 with the advent of new Colour Technology via myheritage.com, I set about colourising some of  them with the help of a friend to enhance their beauty and started a mission to find out more about these emotive  images via the Brighton Past Facebook site.

The following pages are mainly the results of the memories of the Brighton Past Facebook site. Written by people that have  lived and loved in our wonderful city of Brighton & Hove. A link is provided above each photo.

I am also very excited to have added a shop to this site offering exclusive merchandise with proceeds  going to the Raystede Animal Sanctuary who have suffered financially because of the results of the recent Corvid19 epidemic.

I hope you enjoy these pictures as much as I do.
