Hove Station, with a 2BIL electric unit 2108, presumably on a stopping service to Brighton. Behind is what looks like an E4 tank engine and a'drop window' Maunsell open third carriage next to it. The odd shape of one of the rails, is a conductor rail carrying traction current, and the end is ramped to allow the collector shoes on the units to 'run up' to the correct height when contact is made.

In 1951, getting from A to B was often done under your own steam. I have often heard stories from some older friends of how they cycled to London (Herne Hill velodrome) for a race and then cycled back again!

Lots of cycle memorabilia recounting some lost love of previous bicycles was posted on the Brighton Past website (click on picture number for more info).

The picture was actually identified by Patricia Richardson whose husband was a regular cyclist at Preston Park. The shop was identified as George Hills Cycle Shop and the chap on the left worked there and also rode at Preston Park. The shop was in Spring Street (off Western Road).

Great photograph of Hove Station, with a 2BIL electric unit 2108, presumably on a stopping service to Brighton. Behind is what looks like an E4 tank engine and a'drop window' Maunsell open third carriage next to it. To the person who commented on the shape of one of the rails, this is a conductor rail carrying traction current, and the end is ramped to allow the collector shoes on the units to 'run up' to the correct height when contact is made.
